[funxone] Brimham Rocks: The Dancing Bear - Wild n Wacky Eroded Rocks

Brimham Rocks: The Dancing Bear - There are many variations of rock formations, caused by the Millstone Grit being eroded by water, glaciation and wind, most of which have achieved amazing shapes. Many of the formations have been named, though some imagination is required and the correct viewing angle is helpful. Examples are The Sphinx, The Watchdog, The Camel, The Turtle and The Dancing Bear.

The Brimham Rocks are rock formations located on Brimham Moor in North Yorkshire, England. The rocks stand at a height of nearly 30 metres in an area owned by the National Trust which is part of the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Looking at the wild and wacky shapes of the eroded rocks on Brimham Moor is a little bit like spotting shapes in the clouds or doing the Rorschach inkblot test. You can see friendly dogs, flying angels, giant mushrooms, cockerels, love hearts, boats, piles of books - have a look and decide for yourself.

Many of the formations have already been given nicknames by locals such as the Dancing Bear, the Smartie Tube and Idol Rock, but there are always more to find in the 50 acres of moorland near Summerbridge in Nidderdale, North Yorkshire.

The rocks are high up in the Dales, affording wonderful views over the surrounding countryside, as you scramble about to find the perfect place for a picnic. The amazing formations are created out of millstone grit, a very tough kind of sandstone which was carved into this variety of shapes by erosion during the last Ice Age over 80,000 years ago – an all-natural, ancient sculpture park.
